 Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister.

Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, says Russia did not invade Ukraine, but carried out special military operations because "we have failed to convince the West that pulling Ukraine into the net is a criminal act."

In an exclusive interview with the BBC, he reiterated that the campaign was aimed at "liberating Ukraine" in his language.

The Russian foreign minister has not given a single interview to any Western media since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

In this interview, the bangla news's Steve Rosenberg quotes a UN report. Lavrov was asked a direct question: "In the village of Ehadni in the Chernihiv region, Russian forces detained 260 villagers, including 74 children, in the basement of a school for 28 days. Ten old people died there. Is this the fight against the Nazis?"

In response, Mr. Lavrov said: "It's a tragedy. But the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Secretary-General and other UN officials are under constant pressure from the West.

"Russia is not a washed basil leaf. Russia is what Russia is. We are not ashamed to show what we are."
